Independent voter registration grows, dems decrease

The Arizona Secretary of State released voter registration figures this week. They reveal that independents will most likely make up the largest segment of Arizona voters in the near future.

Since the 2010 general election, Independent or non-affiliated voters grew by 54,530. Republican ranks grew by 2,292. Democratic registrations shrank by 50,030.

Republicans make up 35.98 percent of registered voters. Independents comprise 32.9 percent of registered voters. Democrats make up 30.24 percent.

In Maricopa County, 25,202 voters left the Democratic Party. Democrats lost the most voters in Mohave County, with 14 percent of the Democrats changing their registrations. However, the Dems increased registrations in three counties: Apache, La Paz and Santa Cruz.

Republicans gained members in Maricopa County, adding over 3,000 voters. The Republicans increased their numbers by 9 percent in Apache County. Republicans added voters in 11 of the state’s 15 counties: Apache, Cochise, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Maricopa, Navajo, Pinal, Santa Cruz and Yavapai.
