Air Force assists in rescue on Pima Canyon Trail

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a 9-1-1 call from a female, who stated that she was out on the Pima Canyon Trail where she had fallen and injured herself, on June 22, at approximately 11:41 a.m. The woman is an intern with the Arizona Game & Fish Department.

Upon arrival, the rescuers began their hike towards the anticipated incident location, approximately 4 miles from the trailhead. The Search & Rescue Unit received assistance from volunteers of the Southern Arizona Rescue Association (SARA) and Border Patrol’s BORSTAR Unit.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base was also contacted to see if the Air Force Pararescue Unit (also known as PJ’s) was available, as other air lifting resources were tied up in rescue operations elsewhere. The Air Force scrambled a team of pararescuemen and responded to the incident location.

Once Search & Rescue Units arrived at the scene the female was found with elevated vital signs but in stable condition. With the assistance of the U.S. Air Force helicopter, she was airlifted to University Medical Center for evaluation and further treatment.
