Tucson Police arrest man for vehicle crime spree

Derrick Nelson was arrested on September 17, for several incidents including carjacking a City of Tucson work truck in the Tucson Police Department’s jurisdiction. Nelson was driving the truck when he had a collision with another vehicle at the Chevron located at Palo Verde Road and Irvington Road.

The female driver of the other vehicle got out and attempted to speak with Nelson about the collision. He robbed her, taking her cash, then fled the area in the stolen truck. Nelson then drove to the area of Orange Grove Road and Shannon Road where he abandoned the stolen City of Tucson truck and stole a construction truck that was by the side of the road.

Nelson then drove to an acquaintance’s residence nearby. Nelson entered the residence and attempted to rob the occupants of their cell phones and money. When he was unsuccessful,Nelson exited the residence and tried to leave again. A deputy searching the area located the truck in front of the residence. As Nelson attempted to leave, he rammed the deputy’s fully marked patrol vehicle. Additional deputies arrived on scene and were able to take Nelson into custody without further incident.
