Low income tax clinic offers year round assistance

Pio Decimo Center’s Low Income Tax Clinic offers help to individuals with income tax-related assistance, education and advocacy and will host a special ‘We’re Here To Help’ day on Thursday, November 29, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., 848 S. Seventh Ave., Tucson.

Tax-related assistance includes helping clients understand and respond to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) correspondence, establishing payment plans, providing tax preparation services for those who need help with prior year tax returns and answering basic tax law questions.

Education on tax-related topics is provided primarily to people new to the American tax system who speak English as their second language.

Advocacy work goes further. Pio Decimo’s attorney provides free legal assistance to qualifying individuals. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting with audits, filing appeals with IRS and representation in Tax Court. Pio Decimo can work with clients experiencing financial hardships to request a delay on collection activity. This will not change the tax liability, nor any penalty or interest accruing. This action, if accepted by the IRS, will place a hold on collection activity until the client is in a better position to make payments.

Pio Decimo can also assist clients with Offers-in-Compromise. This procedure allows a client to negotiate settlements with the Internal Revenue Service. An offer in compromise allows a person to settle a tax debt for less than the full amount owed. It may be a legitimate option if you can’t pay your full tax liability, or if doing so creates a financial hardship.
