Ivan’s handler, officer Fenoglio, spotted the truck within minutes of the carjacking and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled. The vehicle crashed following a short pursuit and several officers, including K9 Ivan, pursued him on foot. Both K9 Ivan and the subject were shot and killed during the ensuing confrontation.
Officers said they gave the suspect repeated commands to drop the weapon but he refused to comply. Officers Fenoglio, Matthew Merz, Jason Kerns and Jon Collamore fired multiple shots at the suspect striking him numerous times.
Prior to the shooting, the suspect drove through the front yard of a home in the 500 block of North Treat. After causing extensive damage to a light pole, a wrought iron fence and landscape, the chase ended in an alley north of Second Street and east of Stewart Avenue.
