Pima County armed robber caught after chase

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a report of an armed robbery at the Circle K at 4605 West Valencia Road on December 26. Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the store clerk had been threatened with a small handgun.

The suspect took cash, alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. He then left the store and was seen leaving the scene in a white Pontiac Sunfire. Deputies searched the area and eventually located the suspect vehicle at the Circle K at 2840 West Los Reales Road. The deputy who located the vehicle attempted a traffic stop, but the car sped off trying to evade apprehension. Pima County deputies pursued the car and received assistance by the Sheriff’s Air Unit.

In the vicinity of Camino De La Tierra and Avenida Isabel the fleeing vehicle hit a set of road spikes that had been deployed by deputies. With its driver’s side tires deflating, the car turned westbound on Camino De Amigos. The Pontiac stopped where the roadway dead ends and the driver fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended. The items taken from the Circle K on Valencia Road were located in the suspect’s vehicle.

The robber was identified as 28-year-old Julio Christopher Martinez. He was charged with Armed Robbery, Unlawful Flight From Law Enforcement, Possession of a Narcotic Drug and Possession of Marijuana. Martinez was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
