Pima County teenager dies after hit and run

Pima County deputies responded to a report of a person down, by the intersection of W. Nebraska Street and S. San Joaquin Avenue. When deputies arrived on scene they found a 17-year-old female, Ruby Martinez, lying on the ground unresponsive with signs of trauma. The deputies immediately began taking life saving measures until paramedics arrived.

Ms. Martinez succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Saturday.

During the initial investigation it was believed that Ms. Martinez was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle was not present when deputies arrived but while they were conducting the investigation the vehicle returned. According to the driver, identified as Denise Torres, age 42, she was driving westbound on Nebraska St. just past San Joaquin Ave. and she saw something in the road. Ms. Torres knew she struck whatever was in the road but left the area and went home. When she left the scene she was not aware of what it was she hit. After speaking with family members she returned to the scene. Ms. Torres was ultimately arrested on felony hit and run charges for leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, and was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center. The investigation is still ongoing.
