Pima County man shot after reaching for knife

Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 9-1-1 call about a possible verbal domestic dispute on February 10, at about 5:19 a.m. in the 6100 block of North Pepper Tree Lane. A female inside a residence reported that her boyfriend was outside in her vehicle.

The couple had a verbal dispute earlier, but she also advised of physical violence by the boyfriend against her in the past. She explained that she was fearful of him due to past experiences. She said he was now inside her car, and she needed the vehicle in order to go to work. Deputies then went to the car parked in front of the residence in order to talk to the male.

The man, Michael Schuoler, age 49, sat inside the car and refused to follow the deputies’ orders. At one point, Schuoler suddenly reached for his waistband. Deputy Greenman, who was located on the passenger side of the vehicle, saw Schuoler produce something from his waistband and noticed the potentially lethal threat to his partner on the driver’s side. In response to this threat, Deputy Greenman fired his duty weapon once and struck Schuoler.

It was later determined that Schuoler pulled a knife from his waistband. Schuoler was then removed from the vehicle and deputies immediately began to administer first aid prior to the arrival of an ambulance. They discovered that Schuoler also suffered a self-inflicted laceration to his neck. He was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Deputy Greenman has been a deputy with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department since March 2012. He was placed on 72 hours administrative leave, which is standard procedure for this type of incident. Charges against Schuoler are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
