On May 23, 2013, at approximately 9:30 pm, Pima County deputies responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a car and two pedestrians. The collision occurred after the Mountain View High School graduation ceremony.
According to authorities, a small red SUV was travelling northbound on Thornydale when it struck two individuals as they crossed the street. One of the individuals struck was later pronounced deceased at the hospital and has been identified as Dorothy Penrod, age 82. Her nephew was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center and is currently in critical condition.
Deputies with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit spoke to the driver of the SUV, and it was determined that he was travelling at 40-45 miles per hour and tried to stop before the impact. The area where the collision occurred was very dark and the pedestrians were not using a crosswalk.
