Man arrested in Pima County hit and run

On June 05, 2013, following an extensive investigation, deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit arrested 24-year-old Enrique Hernandez for the hit and run death of Mr. John Akers on May 23, 2013.

Enrique Hernandez was arrested for Murder Second Degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Serious Injury or Death.

On May 23, 2013, at approximately 3:30 am, officers with the Tucson Police Department responded to West Irvington Road & South Mission Road reference a motor vehicle collision. During the course of their investigation they found that the accident actually took place in the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and turned over the investigation.

Deputies with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and found that Mr. Akers, age 64, was pronounced deceased on scene. They also found that Mr. Akers was traveling northbound on Mission Road. Upon entering the intersection at Irvington Road, he was struck by a vehicle. Hernandez, the driver of the vehicle left the scene before authorities arrived, but witnesses were able to give officers a good description.

The investigators have reason to believe that alcohol was a factor in this collision.
