Grijalva confuses reform law vote

Arizona Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva had to read a statement on the floor of the House explaining how he made a mistake in voting for the Dodd-Frank banking reform law. Grijalva inadvertently voted in favor of the Swap Jurisdiction Certainty Act and against the Democratic alternative (known as a Motion to Recommit).

He clarified that his votes were unintentional and that he opposes the Swap Jurisdiction Certainty Act.

Grijalva’s statement does not change the way his vote is counted on passage of the bill, but his statement will be noted in the debate history.

His request to have the statement appear after roll call votes refers to its placement in the official Congressional record of the proceedings.

“I ask unanimous consent for my statement to appear immediately after Roll Call vote 217 and 218. Mr. Speaker, on Wednesday, June 12, I inadvertently switched my recorded votes for roll call 217 and 218. The votes were on the Motion to Recommit with Instructions and on passage of the Swap Jurisdiction Certainty Act, respectively. My intended vote should be noted as a ‘yea’ on roll call 217 and a ‘nay’ on roll call 218.”
