Grijalva calls on DOJ to investigate George Zimmerman

Arizona congressman, Raul Grijalva has called on Eric Holder to pursue civil George Zimmerman after his acquittal by a Florida jury yesterday. Grijalva warned Sunday that Zimmerman’s acquittal sets a dangerous precedent for protection under “stand-your-ground” laws.

In an appearance on CNN, Grijalva, co-chair of the Progressive Caucus was joined by Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.), said he was concerned that people would start protecting themselves.

“You empower individual citizens to basically take the law into their own hands,” Grijalva said. Grijalva then called for the U.S. Justice Department to level federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Fattah expressed anger with the jury of six women for failing to convict Zimmerman on any charges.

Later, on his Facebook page, Grijalva told his “friends, “I was on CNN’s “State of the Union” this morning to talk about the George Zimmerman verdict and the Hispanic Caucus meeting with the president earlier this week on immigration. This verdict set, I think, a very bad precedent. The legal process is likely going to continue at the federal level. Whatever you believe about justice, this is not the last word on this case.”
