Civic engagement schools honored by ADE

By ADI Staff Reporter on September 14, 2013

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) will honor 20 schools across the state as Arizona Civic Engagement Schools in an award ceremony on Constitution Day. The schools were selected through ADE’s Excellence in Civic Engagement Program (ECEP).

The award ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Phoenix Ballroom at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel, 2620 W. Dunlap in Phoenix. Members of the media are invited to attend.

The event will open with the Presentation of the Colors and the National Anthem performed by the Paradise Valley Elite Choir.

Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal and Mr. John Balentine, who oversees the Civic Engagement program, will speak. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has also recorded a video message that will be shown at this event. Of the twenty-eight schools that originally submitted entries, ten will be recognized as Schools of Merit, and ten will be honored as Schools of Distinction.

Launched in October 2012, the ECEP was designed to recognize and support the important role that schools play to ensure that students are informed and engaged citizens. ECEP recognizes schools that implement the principles discussed within the Guardian of Democracy: The Civic Mission of Schools report, which provides research-based evidence of the decline in civic learning in American schools and presents six proven practices that should be at the center of every school’s approach to civic learning.
