Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane will issue a formal invitation to Prince William and Prince Harry to play at next year’s Scottsdale Ferrari-Maserati Polo Championships. This year’s Championships take place Nov. 1-2 at WestWorld, Scottsdale’s equestrian and special events center, 16601 N. Pima Road.

The Mayor’s invitation will be made Nov. 2 via the Clogau Wales Polo Team, which is playing at this year’s Championships against the U.S. Military Team.

The Clogau team, established in 2008, is the first international polo team to represent Wales. Charles, Prince of Wales, and the eldest child and heir apparent of Queen Elizabeth II, supports the Wales team as its first patron. The team has played alongside Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The team’s chairman, Capt. Harry Legge-Bourke, a personal friend of Prince Charles and the princes, will accompany the team to Scottsdale. Legge-Bourke’s sister, Tiggy, was William and Harry’s nanny.

During their polo careers, every member of the Wales team played alongside the princes. Player Roddy Matthews, who will be playing in Scottsdale, was on the same team as Prince Charles for a season and trained the young princes early in their careers.

Pete Webb, who will also be playing at Scottsdale and is a regular at the world famous Guards Polo Club, has played alongside the Princes. Ricky Cooper, the team captain, played against William during his time at Sandhurst.

“The Polo Championships have become a great event in Scottsdale and are already attracting some of polo’s best players,” said Mayor Lane. “With the Clogau Wales Team playing this year and with the royal connections it brings, it only makes sense to invite the most famous polo players in the world and greatest ambassadors of the Sport of Kings — Prince William and Prince Harry.”

“We would love for them to see the great event we have built here and enjoy the impeccable weather and natural beauty that Scottsdale has to offer.”

Mayor Lane will formally present the invitation during a break in the action on Nov. 2 via a Mayoral Proclamation he will present to Wales’ Captain Cooper.
