No damage to I-17 ‘Stack’ interchange after fire

On Thursday, a fire burned near the I-17 ‘Stack’ interchange. While the blaze did create a traffic nightmare of long delays for commuters, it did not cause any heat or smoke damage to the freeway – a fact that was confirmed by ADOT on Friday.

ADOT inspectors spent time Friday morning getting a closer look at the steel-girder system supporting the ramp that connects westbound I-10 with northbound I-17. The inspection confirmed that the fire did not affect the girders or concrete sections of the ramp.

The right lane of the ramp had been closed overnight as a precaution, but was reopened to traffic Friday morning.

Nearly 60 firefighters worked on three building fires possibly started by a spark from welding.
