A female passenger got out and ran into the hospital. Deputies followed the female, identified as 55-year-old Marie Margeson, into the hospital and took her into custody. Deputies discovered the driver left the vehicle behind and fled on foot. Deputies searched the area around the hospital in an attempt to locate the suspect. As the deputies were searching for the suspect, officers from the Oro Valley Police Department responded to a home invasion in the 12300 block of North Mount Bigelow.
When the officers arrived the victims were still inside. Interior noises indicated the suspect was moving around in the residence. As the officers were going into the backyard, the suspect began shooting at them. The suspect then started moving north through neighboring backyards. Three Oro Valley officers cleared the house and found the family hiding in the master bedroom closet.
The deputies searching the area near the hospital heard the gunshots and drove to the location of the home invasion thinking it might be their suspect. When they arrived, they made contact with another resident who informed them the suspect was inside his home with his wife and daughter. The deputies and officers immediately contained the area so the suspect could not leave.
At approximately 11:30 the Pima Regional SWAT Team was requested to respond to the Mount Bigelow address reference a hostage situation. As they were waiting for the SWAT Team to arrive, one of the deputies saw the wife coming down the stairs. He grabbed her and safely got her out of the house. The SWAT Team took over the scene at 1:16 a.m., and SWAT Negotiators immediately began trying to contact the suspect to have the victim released. At 5:13 a.m., the female victim was release and returned to her family.
A robot was sent into the residence to locate the suspect. At 10:09 a.m., the suspect was located in an upstairs bathroom. SWAT Negotiators continued trying to talk the suspect out of the residence but he refused to leave. At approximately 11:55 a.m., the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Steven Wahl, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit, Robbery Assault Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Community Problems Unit and Night Detective Squad responded to assist in the investigation.
Marie Margeson was transported to the Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked on the following charges:
• Possession of a Dangerous Drug
• Possession of a Narcotic Drug
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
• Two outstanding warrants.
