Tucson World Cup 2014 on The Road to Rio

Corey Cogdell

Tucson World Cup 2014 April 8 through April 15 at The Tucson Trap and Skeet Club – 7800 Old Ajo Highway, Tucson AZ 85735

The World’s Best Olympic Shotgun Shooters are headed to Tucson to compete in an ISSF World Cup Shotgun Competition.

More than 300 athletes from over 60 countries are attending.

The United States will represented by five time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode, she will be competing in Women’s Skeet with 35 of the best women’s skeet shooters in the world will be trying to knock her off her throne. Corey Cogdell won a Bronze medal in Beijing and a Gold Medal at the 2012 Tucson World Cup; she will be competing against Russian Silver medalist Elena Tkach, reigning two time USA National Champion Rachael Heiden and over 40 other Olympic hopefuls who are looking to take the crown from her. Olympic Gold Medal winner Glen Eller and a strong team of world champions from the Army Marksmanship unit will be representing the United States in Double Trap at this competition. They will be defending the gold against some of the world’s best which include Olympic Gold medal winner Russell Mark from Australia and 2012 Olympic Silver medal winner Hakan Dahlby from Sweden.

Last but not least Tucson’s own native son Luis (Taz) Gloria from Mountain View High School will be battling to show the world that Arizona has some world class shooters of our own. While Taz might be the youngest competitor in this tournament, he has the heart of a lion when it comes to defending his home range.

The World is sending their best to compete at this World Cup. No fewer than eight Olympic medalists, along with a host of other world class competitors will try to go home with the gold.

This World Cup means a lot to Tucson and The United States shooting team given that, for many years shotgun world cup competitions were not held in the United States due to a lack of a world class range.

In 2010 The Tucson Trap and Skeet Club started construction on its five Olympic Bunker Traps to help fill this need. The construction was long, difficult and expensive, but the results were worth it. Tucson has been rated as one of the top 10 Olympic style clubs in the world.

The 2012 Tucson World Cup was a huge success for the sport. Six world records were either broken or equaled. The athletes all agreed that the great weather, the back ground and the club’s facilities contributed to so many records falling at one match. The ISSF made the decision to hold this 2014 World Cup in Tucson very shortly after the 2012 match was complete.

Tucson is uniquely qualified to host events of this kind.

First, the club is one of only three ranges in the US with a large enough facility to handle the amount of competitors that come to these events. Second, the surrounding area includes a lot of hotels and resorts, which will be needed given that over 1000 people will be coming in for this match. Third, Tucson has an International Airport to bring the athletes, coaches, trainers and spectators into our fair city.

During the 2012 World Cup, many of the athletes visited Tucson’s and Southern Arizona’s attractions. Old Tucson, The Desert Museum, Kartchner Caverns and Tombstone were just a few of the places that were visited by these athlete/tourists. They loved shopping at our retail stores, prices are much better when compared to a lot of places in the world and Tucson’s customer service received high marks as well.

The Tucson Trap and Skeet Club, USA Shooting and our Sponsors would like to invite everyone to come out and experience this world class competition.

Competitions will begin daily at 9:00 am and admission is free.

The Tucson Trap and Skeet Club and USA Shooting would like to thank our sponsors for helping host this event.
