Lightning-caused fire near Elgin burns 600 acres

A fire on the Babacamari Ranch, named Odonell Canyon Fire, started after a brief lightning storm, according to Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels. The storm ignited several fires that combined into one on Saturday afternoon.

The fire started on Babcamari Ranch just before 3:00 p.m. and spread quickly. An estimated 600 acres of land has been burned. Fire fighters from the Sonoita-Elgin Fire Department are being assisted by the U.S. Forest Service.

Crews are currently burning land around the fire in order to prevent fresh land from fueling the flames.

According to Dannels no structures are threatened.
