Google announced Friday that Scottsdale has met the criteria for initial infrastructure studies and is advancing in a process to lure the firm’s ultra-high-speed Google Fiber network.
“This was the first step in seeing if your city is a good fit for Google Fiber,” the company announced in an email to project supporters. “We’ve been impressed by how enthusiastic the city of Scottsdale has been as we’ve worked with them over the past few months …”
Google representatives plan to meet next week with Scottsdale officials as part of the next step in the process. The firm could decide by the end of the year whether to begin installation in Scottsdale, Phoenix and Tempe. .
Google Fiber is an Internet and TV service that provides Internet connectivity that is up to 100 times faster than the basic broadband, along with hundreds of high-definition TV channels.
The service is currently available in Kansas City, Missouri, and Provo Utah, and will be available in Austin, Texas, later this year.
