Dedication of The O’odham Family Monument

Sighting of Father Kino

The community is invited to join Los Descendientes del Presidio de Tucson for the dedication of the Tucson’s First People of the Land of Chuk Shon momument, on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 9 a.m.  The monument is located at the intersection of Starr Pass and Mission Road, the northwest corner of Mission Road and Starr Pass Boulevard.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

Artist Luis Gustavo Mena’s work honors the O’odham and ancestors who have been in the Tucson Basin for over 4,000 years and  depicts the first sighting or Father Kino.  A free shuttle will run from Avenida del Convento at Cushing (south of the Mercado de San Agustín) beginning at 8:15. Street parking is available by the shuttle location; limited street parking is available near the Mission Road and Starr Pass Boulevard intersection and near the Santa Cruz River Walk. The shuttle provides return trips following the dedication ceremony.

The Mission Starr Pass Intersection Improvement is a project of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and the Regional Transportation Authority.  Both entities contributed for the artwork as did neighborhood associations and numerous individuals from the community. The Tucson Pima Arts Council administers the Public Art Programs of Tucson and Pima County.
