Small fire in Chiracahua Mountains quickly contained

On Tuesday June 10, 2014 at approximately 5:37 pm, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a fire at Cole Pit Canyon and Turkey Creek Road mile post 7 in the Chiricahua Mountains. The caller advised that he was logging in the area when he heard a loud noise that he believed was a lightning strike, before noticing the fire.

The Arizona State Forestry Division was advised and requested the Elfrida Fire Department to respond along with them in order to get control quickly. Units arrived on scene and advised that no structures were threatened, air support was on standby, and Sheriff’s Deputies were in the area for traffic control.

The fire was estimated at 15 acres in size and the Forest Service ground and air units worked to contain the fire which took several hours. The Sheriff’s Office units cleared to area at approximately 9:00 pm.
