Fatal cyclist collision at west Speedway & Main

On June 18, 2014, at 5:53 a.m., officers from Operations Division Downtown responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle in the area of West Speedway Boulevard and North Main Avenue. The motor vehicle involved was a 2001 Audi A4. The driver of the Audi remained at the scene. The cyclist was pronounced deceased.

Traffic detectives responded to continue the investigation. The investigation revealed that the cyclist was traveling westbound on Speedway in the bicycle lane, west of Main. The Audi was also traveling westbound on Speedway. The Audi ran the red light at the intersection of Speedway and Main and collided with the cyclist from behind. The vehicle
continued westbound before colliding with a parked vehicle west of 13th Avenue.

Detectives determined that drugs were a factor in this collision.

The female victim was identified as 38 year old, Kris Lee Chambers. Next of kin have been notified. The suspect was identified as 25 year old, Gerardo Cazares. Cazares was arrested and booked into the Pima County Jail and charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Criminal Damage.
