The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed December 2010, and the Defense of Marriage Act was ruled unconstitutional June 2013. These changes allow servicemembers and federal employees that are part of the LGBT community the same rights as heterosexual marriages. Some of these rights include base housing, medical and survivor benefits.
In an effort to educate the base members, the LGBT Pride Observance Committee is hosted an Informational Fair on Friday, which included legal, community, and base agencies to provide information and answer any questions.
“LGBT Pride Month is our time to bring awareness and to take pride and acceptance of one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity,” said Airman 1st Class Christiaan-Emil Guerra, 355th Component Maintenance Squadron electronic warfare systems team member.
This month also provides an opportunity for the LGBT community to make known the contributions and progress made by them locally, nationally, and internationally.
