Pima County burglary suspect shot by deputy had assault style BB gun

Slade Steven Olsen

Chief Deputy Nanos, who has all but replaced Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, issued a press release on Friday to report that a burglary suspect who was shot on Thursday by a deputy was wielding a BB gun.

Detectives discovered when the homeowner/victim initially confronted the armed suspect in his home, the victim was also armed.

The homeowner was able to disarm the suspect, Slade Olsen, without any altercation between the two. The homeowner contacted 9-1-1 and waited for deputies to arrive while keeping both guns. 9-1-1 dispatchers advised the homeowner to separate himself from the suspect, so the victim walked outside.

The suspect exited the home and re-entered the home through a different doorway. The suspect then exited the front door and confronted the victim with an assault style rifle which the suspect had found inside the home. Olsen attempted to exchange the rifle for the handgun which the victim had taken from the suspect. Mr. Olsen had the victim cornered on the front porch when deputies arrived.

Olsen had his back towards deputies as they began giving him commands. As the suspect turned around, he pointed the rifle, at Deputy Justin Meeboer. Deputy Meeboer discharged his firearm in fear for his life. The rifle in Olsen’s possession at the time of the shooting was found to be a BB gun. A picture depicting an example of the BB gun has been included along with Mr. Olsen’s Motor Vehicle Department photo.

The suspect, Slade Steven Olsen, has been charged with the following:
•   2 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon or Dangerous Instrument –
•   Burglary in the 1st Degree

Olsen remains in the hospital recovering while the investigation is ongoing.
