Tucson bicyclist killed, ran red light

Tucson Police are investigating a vehicle collision that occurred Tuesday August 20th, killing a 54-year old bicyclist. Officers were called to the intersection of Swan Road and 29th Street just after 1:00pm Tuesday regarding a vehicle collision involving a passenger car and a person on a bicycle. Upon arrival, they located an adult male bicyclist with life threatening injuries as a result of the collision. He was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The 36-year old female driver of the vehicle involved was not injured.

Traffic Detectives determined that a 2000 Chevrolet Impala was traveling northbound on Swan Road approaching 29th Street. The light phased to green and the Impala entered the intersection. The bicyclist was traveling westbound on 29th Street and ran the red light at Swan Road. The bicyclist was struck by the Impala as he entered the intersection.

The bicyclist was identified as 54-year old Mark Scherer. The next of kin have been notified.
