On February 19, 2007 Glendale Police Officers Anthony Holly and David Goita conducted a traffic stop in the 5200 block of North 60th Avenue. Bryan Hulsey was a passenger in the vehicle. During the traffic stop, Hulsey exited the vehicle and confronted both of the officers and then fired a .357 handgun, striking and killing Officer Holly. Officer Goita returned fire, striking and injuring Hulsey who was subsequently taken into custody.
A Maricopa County Grand Jury indicted Hulsey on February 28, 2007 one count of first degree murder, one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of misconduct involving weapons. Over the next seven years, five successive teams of defense attorneys were appointed to represent Hulsey, four of which withdrew from the case.
Trial began with jury selection on May 12, 2014. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts on July 28, 2014. The count of misconduct involving weapons was dismissed.
