Yuma man shot while dove hunting

On September 5, 2014, at approximately 6:08 p.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to County 11th Street and the Levee Road in reference to a male subject that had been shot. While en route, deputies were advised that the suspect had left the scene in a white GMC pick-up. Deputies were able to locate the suspect vehicle on County 9th Street, west of Somerton Avenue, with the assistance of U.S. Border Patrol agents working in that area.

Upon arriving at the scene of the shooting, deputies met with the victim who stated that he had been shot by the suspect while dove hunting. The victim had multiple wounds resulting from the shot gun round. He was transported by Rural Metro Ambulance to the Yuma Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, Carl Robert Coats, 66, of Canyon Lake, CA, was arrested and booked into the Yuma County Detention Center for aggravated assault.
