Pinal County residents warned of telephone scam

On Friday, October 10th, 2014 the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a scam occurring in Pinal County. A San Tan Valley woman received a call from a male subject who identified himself “as an officer with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Warrants Division”. The woman reported the scam artist told her that her relatives have warrants, and properly identified her relatives by correct names and dates of birth.

She further reported the scam artist told her they needed to pay a certain amount of money, via “money pack voucher” from a Circle K convenience store, to ensure there is not an arrest made on the person with the alleged warrant.

As the lady began questioning the scam artist about the requested payment, the scam artist threatened that if she did not make the payment in one hour the warrants would be activated.

We have received information on a similar incident where the caller was a female.

Sheriff Paul Babeu Stated, “It is not the practice of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement agencies in general, to call and solicit payment for warrants or demand payment over the telephone”.
