McSally narrowly ahead, recount to begin

An automatic recount will begin in the CD2 race between Martha McSally and Congressman Ron Barber after Pima County finished counting over 4,700 ballots today, resulting in a small lead for McSally of 133 votes.

Ron Barber is not conceding the race according to sources, and will challenge the County’s decision to toss 800 provisional ballots. The McSally camp has worked to have ballots tossed since the election last Tuesday.

On Monday, Pima County Superior Court Judge James Marner denied her request to have all of the remaining provisional ballots tossed.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, there are now only 200 votes countywide left to count.

According to ABC15, Barber picked up just 46 votes after the final batch of verified provisional ballots were counted.

Barber spokeswoman Ashley Nash-Hahn in a statement said the race remained too close to call.

“This is the closest congressional election in Arizona history,” Nash-Hahn said in a statement. “The law calls for an automatic recount in a race this close, and that is where we are headed.”

Just this afternoon, a County official advised the ADI that the votes would not be completely counted until much later this week. It is unclear how the County moved so quickly today.

The Secretary of State’s office will conduct the official canvas of the election on December 1, and the automatic recount will then begin.
