On Saturday November 29, 2014 at approximately 5:42 pm, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist the Sierra Vista Police Department with a motorcycle accident at mile post 2.1 on Charleston Road.
Upon deputies arrival, they located two motorcycles on the roadway, one of which had obvious damage. The Deputies secured the area for a medical helicopter to land and transport a 54 year old Sierra Vista man to a Tucson hospital for serious trauma. Another 52 year old Sierra Vista man was reportedly riding the second motorcycle and was transported to the Sierra Vista Police Department on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence.
The initial investigation indicates that the men were traveling on Charleston Road westbound when the 54 year old reportedly bumped the back of the motorcycle in front of him causing his own bike to crash and throwing him approximately 10 feet from the area.
Witnesses have provided information to Sheriff’s Deputies that indicate the motorcycles were weaving in the roadway just before the accident.
Charleston Road was closed during the investigation with eastbound traffic being diverted to Guilio Cesar south to Highway 90 and then east to Moson Road before heading north again to Charleston. The diversion route was reversed for vehicles travelling west towards Sierra Vista. The roadway has just been re-opened for through traffic.
The investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office
