Mesa woman sentenced to 20 years for ID theft

A 28 year old Mesa woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing four other women’s identities to cash four checks totaled $1,653.25

Carlee Elise Kelly of Mesa was sentenced for her crimes related to the identity theft of four different women. Her crimes include: Fraudulent Schemes and Artifices, Aggravated Taking the Identity of Another Person, Forgery and Theft.

According to the Attorney General’s office, Kelly has a history of committing forgery offenses and those prior convictions contributed to the length of her sentence.

From December 24, 2012 to December 28, 2012, Kelly cashed four different fraudulent checks written on a valid account belonging to Arizona Automobile Insurance Company (AAIC). Kelly used the stolen identities of her victims to cash the fraudulent checks. The four checks totaled $1,653.25. The victims’ wallets or purses had previously been stolen with their identifications inside. Kelly used the victims’ names on the fraudulent AAIC checks and their stolen identifications to cash the checks at two Wal-Marts and a Check Smart store in Mesa. Kelly was captured on camera cashing the fraudulent checks.

In January, U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell ordered an immediate halt to the state’s enforcement of identity theft laws that penalize immigrants in the country illegally for seeking employment, according to the Los Angeles Times.
