Phoenix Police officer stabbed, praised for arrest of homicide suspect

Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski is calling a Phoenix Police Officer a hero who confronted and helped to take into custody a homicide suspect seen stabbing a woman on a city street, early March 11.

“This incident is yet another example of the danger our police officers bravely confront on a regular basis to keep our city safe,” said Councilman Michael Nowakowski, chair of the Public Safety and Veterans Subcommittee. “This officer’s quick, professional reaction and his restraint helped get a violent, suspected murderer off our streets and very well may have saved the life of a Phoenix woman. This is the definition of a hero. ”

The man who stabbed the officer also is suspected of murdering a man Tuesday night.

In the March 11 stabbing incident, according to police, the officer responded to a reported fight between a male and female near 16th and Van Buren streets. When the officer arrived and attempted to stop the fight, the suspect struck the officer and began to stab the women. As the man then dragged the woman across the street, the officer fired on the suspect.. The officer, who suffered a stab would at some point during the confrontation with the suspect, held the suspect at gunpoint until other officers arrived and took him into custody.

Officers responded to the area near 16th and Van Buren streets on the morning of March 11, after several people called to report a man and woman were arguing near the street.

The suspect struck the officer and began to stab the woman he was holding in a choke-hold.
