20 year old man drowns at Salt River

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Jesus Cortez 20 years old, was trying to swim from the east bank to the west bank of the Salt River at Blue Point Bridge on Easter Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office says Cortez succumbed to exhaustion and slipped below the surface of the water.

Bystanders were able to find Cortez and pull him from the water, starting CPR.

When Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol deputies arrived they took over CPR, but efforts to revive Cortez were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It was estimated that the victim was under water for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, officials said.

An exam performed of the victim’s body at the scene did not show any signs of external trauma, according to MCSO.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were factors in this incident.
