DPS Will Target Impaired Drivers This Weekend

The Arizona Department of Public Safety will target distracted, impaired and other dangerous drivers this weekend. DPS troopers will have staffing levels increased throughout the State during the Fourth of July weekend and patrol efforts will be focused on highways and areas identified as being high collision areas.

“The goal is to enhance highway traffic safety by reducing collisions and arresting DUI offenders,” said DPS Lt. Col. Daniel Lugo, who oversees the Highway Patrol Division at DPS.

DPS troopers will participate in several multi-agency DUI Task Forces, conduct speed enforcement operations, seat-belt enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement patrols, and patrols for stranded motorists on Arizona’s highways.

“Our key recommendation for drivers is to expect the unexpected,” said ADOT State Engineer Dallas Hammit. “With a focus on safety, ADOT has moved equipment to locations closer to several highways so crews can more quickly respond to incidents. Drivers should also pack things that will help them if a highway is closed. Extra drinking water, snack foods and a fully charged cell phone are some examples.”

“We want people to celebrate Independence Day and enjoy time with family and friends. If you plan to drink, please do so responsibly by having a sober designated driver”, said Alberto Gutier, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
