The Tucson Police Department is currently investigating a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on June 28, 2015, in the area of South Houghton Road and East Escalante Road. On July 5, 2015, 33-year-old Jonathan Potts passed away due to injuries received from the collision.
On June 28, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Houghton Road and Escalante Road for the report of a hit and run collision with injuries. Upon arrival, an Mr. Potts was located on the ground near his vehicle, with obvious signs of trauma. Tucson Fire immediately transported Mr. Potts to Banner University Medical Center, with life-threatening injuries. The other vehicle involved fled the scene before police arrived.
Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that Mr. Potts knew the occupants of the suspect vehicle and that text messages had been sent back and forth before the collision occurred. The investigation showed that Mr. Potts had been traveling northbound on Houghton Road with his two teen-aged sons. The suspect vehicle was also northbound on Houghton, following Mr. Potts. As Mr. Potts approached East Escalante Road, he pulled over and got out of his vehicle. The suspect vehicle approached shortly after and struck Mr. Potts as he was standing by the roadway. Witnesses watched the suspect vehicle strike Mr. Potts and then flee the scene.
Detectives investigated the incident throughout the evening and were able to locate the suspect vehicle involved. They have determined that at least two people were inside of the vehicle when the collision took place and they have spoken with both of those individuals. As of this date, the investigation is still on-going while detectives review evidence and verify information received.
