Tucson Woman Dies After Hitting 22nd Street Tree

The Tucson Police Department is investigating a fatal vehicle collision that occurred early this morning on East 22nd Street and South Randolph Parkway.

On July 15, 2015, just after 1:15 a.m., a Tucson Police officer driving westbound on 22nd Street past South Randolph Parkway heard what sounded like a vehicle strike something in the median. As the officer approached, he saw a vehicle had struck a tree in the median. The officer located an unresponsive adult female inside the vehicle. He summoned the Tucson Fire Department and immediately began rendering aid. However, the female succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigation’s Unit responded to continue the investigation. The investigation revealed the driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on 22nd Street before losing control and striking a tree in the raised median. The driver was the only person inside the vehicle and she was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in this collision.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 41-year-old Martha Harrington. Next of kin have been notified.

Total fatalities for Tucson including pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles is up 75% thru today over 2014 to 28.
