On July 11, 2015, around 10:30 p.m., a Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a white passenger van for an equipment violation as it travelled east on I40, west of Ash Fork, Arizona. The driver, 29-year-old Justin MacGregor from California, quickly exited the van and approached the deputy.
MacGregor did not have his identification on him, so the deputy followed him back to the passenger side of the vehicle to retrieve it. MacGregor’s passenger, 25-year-old Jessica Chavez who is also from California, opened the door slightly to provide the requested paperwork. As soon as the passenger door opened, the deputy could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from the interior. Chavez was directed out of the vehicle and detained with MacGregor.
Upon opening the van’s side door to check for the source of the marijuana odor, the deputy saw a total of 15 black trash bags all containing recently harvested marijuana plants. The odor was overwhelming. It was later determined the total weight of marijuana seized was 117 pounds. Additionally, over $3500 in cash was recovered from the person of both suspects.
Chavez eventually admitted knowledge of the load and indicated it was destined for the east coast. MacGregor declined to answer questions.
Both suspects were booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including Transportation/Sales of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both remain in-custody, each on a $50,000 bond. Investigation is ongoing.
