Tucson Bicycle Rider Dies Days After Accident

On Saturday morning July 11, 2015, around 9:45 a.m., Tucson Police officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision involving a bicycle on East Broadway Blvd. and South Alvernon Way. Upon arrival officers learned a 29 year-old male was riding a bicycle eastbound on Broadway Blvd. through a green light at North Alvernon Way.

A 69 year-old male driver of a 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck was westbound on Broadway Blvd. preparing to make a southbound turn onto Alvernon Way. The driver of the truck made the southbound turn in front of the bicycle rider causing the collision. The bicycle rider was wearing a helmet.

The bicycle rider was transported to Banner University Medical Center for minor injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to yield way while making a left turn at an intersection, failure to reduce and control speed to avoid an accident and no evidence of financial responsibility.

Later on Thursday July 16, 2015 the Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigation’s Unit learned the bicycle rider succumbed to injuries possibly related to the collision. The bicycle rider has been identified as 29-year-old Miguel Silva. Next of kin have been notified.

The fatalities Year-To-Date are nearly double from last year which had 16 deaths compared to 30 for 2015. With 7 pedestrian each year, bicycles 2 this year and zero in 2014 while motorcycle fatalities have increased from 2 to 5.
