Pat Straney, Oro Valley resident and President of the Rancho Vistoso Community Association, has announced that he will be running against Mayor Satish Hiremath in the upcoming Recall Election. Residents successfully gathered enough signatures against Hiremath last month to force a recall election in November.
Straney needs a mere 221 signatures to be placed on the ballot. Supporters believe that Straney, a popular figure in the small suburb, will have little problem gathering a sufficient number of signatures to meet the September 4th filing date with the town.
Supporters will gather signatures Tuesday through Thursday (August 4th through 6th) from 9 am to noon at the Oro Valley Library for Straney as well as the three candidates running against current Council members, who are also the subject of the recall effort.
The last day to correct your address or register to vote in this election is October 5, 2015.
In July, residents gathered 3,242 signature to force Hiremath’s recall.
Ryan Hartung, Steve Didio, and Shirl Lamonna have been recruited by Oro Valley residents, to run for openings on the Council.
It was the secretive actions of the Mayor, three Council members, and Town staff to proceed with the purchase of the aging El Conquistador Country Club despite the fact that the aging facility is not ADA compliant and will require expensive upgrades, that spurred the recall effort by OVCOG.
$8.3 million has been tentatively approved in the FY 15/16 budget for the golf course management and care as well as the Community Center. The Town Council approved a 1/2 cent sales tax increase for that purpose, but it is unlikely that the proceeds will cover the costs, according to sources. Recently, the Town Manager said he was considering putting a bond package before voters to cover what is expected to be mounting costs associated with the purchase.
