On Friday morning, August 21, at about 6:26 a.m., a two-vehicle collision involving a fatality occurred on State Route 92, milepost 341 near Sierra Vista.
A Nissan pickup, driven by a juvenile male, was entering State Route 92 from Paloma Trail. The pickup struck a Sierra Vista School District school bus that was traveling westbound on State Route 92. The school bus was occupied by 8 students along with its driver, Matthew Wessal, 41, from Sierra Vista.
The driver of the pickup, who was not wearing safety restraints, was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. The female passenger in the pickup, who was the sister of the driver of the pickup, was transported to a hospital in Tucson for treatment of her injuries. She was wearing safety restraints at the time of the collision.
Wessal was transported to a local area hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. All students on the bus were uninjured. They were checked by emergency responders and released to their parents.
State Route 92 was closed for the investigation.
