The Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force cited three businesses during a Covert Underage Buying detail conducted in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control on Friday, Aug. 21.
The Task Force targeted 24 businesses for the detail, based on previous enforcement of liquor violations, complaints from citizens, and other factors. Three teams of Sierra Vista Police officers, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office deputies and CUBs, underage volunteers who attempt to purchase alcohol, assisted with the operation, which was conducted in the Sierra Vista, Bisbee and Tombstone areas.
The following businesses sold alcohol to the underage CUBs and were appropriately charged:
•Native Grill & Wings, 3950 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Sierra Vista
•Express Stop, 101 Ruppe Ave., Bisbee
•Elmo’s Bar, 36 Brewery Ave., Bisbee
The remaining businesses acted appropriately by checking the CUB’s identification card, which clearly indicated he or she was under 21.
“This detail is designed to educate businesses on the importance of properly checking for underage drinkers and to enforce the law when it’s not being followed,” says Cpl. Tim Wachtel, the Sierra Vista Police Department’s CUB detail coordinator.
