Flu Arrives in Arizona

Arizona has identified locally-acquired influenza cases in multiple counties indicating that influenza is circulating in Arizona. During the past week, influenza activity has started to increase but continues to be low.

Arizona reported 3 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in the past week, and there have been 47 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza cases since the beginning of summer.

According to Dr. Cara Christ, Director for the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect in your system, so the department is advising the public to get protected from the flu as early as possible.

Influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza virus. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times, can lead to death. Christ advises “that in addition to getting a flu shot every year, you can help fight the flu with a few easy steps. Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs like washing hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying at home if you are sick.”
