Presidential candidate Senator Benie Sanders stood stood before a sea of tie dye and flannel on Friday night at Tucson’s Reid Park. Arizonans came from across the state to see the elder statesman.
Over 11,000 people gathered in the park to “feel the bern.”
During his speech, in the border community, Sanders focusd on illegal immigration. He tod the crowd that without illegal immigrants, the country’s agricultural industry would collapse. Some in the crowd appeared to wince at the statement but seemed to quickly forgive the older Vermont resident.
Sanders told the crowd, “Healthcare is a right of all people, not a privilege.” He said that while Obamacare was good, “we need to go further. “There is only one major wealthy nation on earth that does not guarantee health care to people as a right,” said Sanders. Sanders said that $300,000 for medical school was too much and argued that there should be no “profiteering from student loans.”
“We are going to create an economy that works for all of us, not just the people on top,” stated Sanders. He also called for an end to “tax breaks to rich people when we have hungry kids.”
Co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, joined the senator on the stage.
