Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva is ecstatic to announce that Yesenia Chavez, who serves as member of Rep. Grijalva’s Washington staff, was named “Best Hill Staffer” in Washington Blade’s “Best of Gay D.C.” reader poll. Yesenia, who serves on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Congressional Staff Association’s board as the association’s Membership Director also works passionately on issues of equality in Rep. Grijalva’s office.
“I could not be more proud to see Yesenia recognized as the tremendous talent that she is,” Rep. Grijalva said. “Yesenia is a profound voice for justice and equality, and brings a passion and tenacity to everything she does that is truly one-of-a-kind. The LGBT community has made dramatic strides towards equality in recent years, and that is something every American should be proud of. But it is because we have leaders like Yesenia – someone who balances determination with kindness and empathy – that we are able to push these critical issues to the forefront. She has overcome adversity many times over and wants to help others do the same. My staff and I are truly thrilled to see Yesenia receive the credit she deserves.”
According to the Congressional Staff Association announcement, “Chavez is a first-generation Mexican-American that serves as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva. She advises the congressman on policy matters pertaining to LGBT, Human Rights, Women’s Issues, Gun Violence, Small Business, Veteran’s Affairs, Transportation, Voting Rights, Military and Defense, and Commemorations. As Membership Director of the LGBT CSA, Yesenia works to create safe and inclusive spaces for all staffers, especially queer women and people of color, to meet one another and foster relationships to promote membership growth.”
