East Tucson Garage Fire Burns Man, Kills Cat

A Tucson house fire in the 8900 block of East Calle Pasto destroyed a garage and sent the resident to the hospital with extensive burns. Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting heavy black smoke and flames from the garage of the home.

Tucson Fire crews arrived on scene and confirmed a fully involved garage, with a truck on fire in the driveway as well. The fire fighters pulled hose lines to the garage area and began extinguishing the flames from the outside. Once additional resources arrived on scene, a hose line was pulled into the front door and a search of the home was undertaken as well as to confirm that the fire was confined to the garage.

Paramedics arrived on scene with the initial crews and bystanders walked a patient up to the vehicle. The patient, a male in his 20’s, was the resident of the house who had extensive burns, with initial estimates that the burns were to approximately 50% of his body. Paramedics immediately began rendering medical aid to the patient and transported the patient to the hospital as quickly as possible.

The ladder crew cut a hole in the roof over the garage allowing the fire and smoke to exit. The ladder crew was able to see fire in the small attic space of the home so they used a flame fighter nozzle to pierce the roof from above and then pour large amounts of water into the attic space. This prevented the fire from spreading any further in the attic. The crew inside the house confirmed that the fire was restricted to the garage but they did have very little visibility due to the heavy amount of smoke. Once the fire was deemed under control, a large fan was set up to ventilate the house to try and reduce smoke damage.

A cat was found during the search of the residence and had passed away. Nine units consisting of 23 firefighters responded to the fire and controlled the fire within 20 minutes of arriving. There were no injuries to firefighters. Investigators are still investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
