The Tucson Police Department is investigating the death of 72-year-old Alan Nielsen at the hands of 43-year-old James L. Mason Jr. early Friday morning at a residence in the 6000 block of East Hampton Street.
Just after 9:00 a.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to the residence after receiving a 911 call about a family fight involving a weapon. Upon arrival, officers detained an adult male who exited the residence. Once inside, officers located an adult male who had been stabbed in the chest with a large hunting knife. Tucson Fire immediately transported the victim to Banner University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
Homicide Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that a verbal altercation had taken place between a stepfather and stepson. During the argument, the stepson stabbed his stepfather in the chest with the knife. The stepson was the individual detained by officers when they first arrived. The victim’s spouse was inside the home during the altercation along with the suspect’s nephew. No one else was injured during the incident.
Detectives booked Mason into the Pima County Jail on one count of Domestic Violence -First Degree Murder.
