The Oro Valley Police Department is reporting that to date, they have taken several reports of a scam in which a person identifies themselves as a Pima County Sheriff Department employee.
The caller identifies himself as Mr. Kemp with the PCSD. He states they have a bench warrant out for their arrest for missing a grand jury appearance. “Mr. Kemp” indicates the charges are $400 for missing the date and $350.00 for the court charges and instructs them to go to the store and purchase a Paypal gift card for $400.
He requests the victim go to Walgreens and call him back at the provided number to get the warrants released. Upon getting the card, the victim calls back and provides the pin as instructed to “Mr. Kemp”. He then tells them the warrants will be released and to go to the sheriff substation on Shannon with a cashier’s check for the other money amount.
OVPD wants to remind people this is not standard practice for law enforcement or for the court system and to always be cautious about providing information or money to unknown persons.
