Attic Fire Displaces Tucson Family Of Four

A family of four was displaced from their home in the 600 block of West Calle Antonia in Tucson, after a fire damaged the attic.

The father was watching television as the rest of the family slept when the breaker tripped, shutting off the power to the tv.  He noticed the smell of smoke shortly thereafter so he woke up his wife and two kids.  The family evacuated the home safely and the resident called 9-1-1 reporting smoke in the home.

The first TFD crew arrived on scene and could see black smoke coming from the gabled ends of the roof.  Conditions inside the home were clear though, which indicated that the fire was in the attic space.  The interior crew began pulling down drywall from the ceiling to try and locate the fire while a ladder crew went to the roof and cut a hole with a chainsaw to gain access to the attic from above.

The interior crew was able to find the fire in the attic space above the living room area and extinguished the flames.  Nine units and twenty-three firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the fire twenty-six minutes after arriving.

The family of four, two adults in their 40’s and two teenage boys, were going to stay with relatives and did not need assistance from the Red Cross.  The fire started in the attic but fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
