Avondale Seeking Nominations For All-America City Youth Award

The City of Avondale is seeking nominations for an exceptional young person for consideration for the All-America City Youth Award.

On March 24, 2016, the National Civic League (NCL) announced its finalists for the 2016 All-America City Award (AAC). The City of Avondale was selected as a finalist for the award, given to ten communities each year, to celebrate and recognize neighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, counties, tribes, and regions that engage residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to tackle critical challenges.

The focus of the 2016 All-America City Award is on communities that have taken innovative action to engage residents in ensuring that all children are healthy and supported to succeed in school and life. The three Avondale programs highlighted in the AAC application were Kids at Hope, the Care1st Avondale Resource Center, and Let’s Move!

Ten of the twenty selected finalists will be awarded the 2016 All-America City Award at the conference held in Denver, Colorado on June 17-19, 2016. At the conference, the NCL will also announce a winner for the All-America City Youth Award. This award was created in memory of NCL’s former President John Parr who highly valued youth leadership.

Avondale seeks to nominate a youth for this prestigious award. Avondale is inviting all school districts, non-profit agencies, businesses, and other local organizations to nominate an individual aged 14-25 who meets the following All-America City Youth Award criteria:
•Exemplifies the All-America City criteria of impact, inclusiveness, innovation, collaboration and civic engagement.
•Has had an impact on the wider community (i.e. What difference did they make?).
•Inspired others to get involved, to undertake comparable efforts.
•Demonstrates the insight and courage to collaborate across lines that usually divide people.
•Must reside, and or go to school in Avondale, Arizona.

To nominate a youth, please submit a one page, single-spaced letter addressed to National Civic League (2 letters of support may be submitted as well) describing how the nominated youth leader meets the criteria. Please submit nomination letters to Keisha Cyriaano, Revitalization Project Manager by Friday, May 6, 2016 via email kcyriaano@avondale.org or you may drop-off/mail to: Attn: Keisha Cyriaano, Revitalization Project Manager, 1007 S. 3rd St, Avondale, AZ 85323.

A nomination team will review the applications during the second week of May and notify the selected individual the following week. The individual selected for the All-America City Youth nomination will travel to Denver (all expenses paid) with the Avondale delegation in June. NCL will announce the national winner on Sunday, June 19, 2016, at the NCL conference in Denver. For more information, please plan contact Keisha Cyriaano at 623-333-2725 kcyriaano@avondale.org.
