Missing Sabino Canyon Hiker Found Dead

On April 8, 2016, at approximately 10:20 p.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a missing hiker, 28-year-old Mauricio Carreon-Maltos. On April 15, Mr. Carreon-Maltos was found deceased in the Seven Falls area.

At approximately 6:28 p.m. Friday, the Sheriff’s Department received a 9-1-1 call from a hiker in Sabino Canyon reporting a body found near Seven Falls. Search and Rescue crews responded to the hiker’s location and confirmed the body found was that of Carreon-Maltos.

Mr. Carreon-Maltos began hiking in the Sabino Canyon Recreation area on April 8, and was last seen that morning. Search and Rescue, Southern Arizona Rescue Association (SARA), Southern Arizona Mounted Search and Rescue (SAMSAR), the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s helicopter (Sheriff 1), and the Department of Public Safety’s helicopter (Ranger) had been searching since.
